Dermatology

Dermatology is the study of the skin, hair, and nails; dermatology pathology or dermatopathology is a sub-category of pathology which focuses on cutaneous (skin) diseases. Physicians specializing in the skin are known as dermatologists, and pathologists who interpret the lab work related to the cutaneous system are known as dermatopathologists.

Specimens collected for information about the skin are acquired through several methods of biopsy including shave, punch, and excision. Utilizing samples of the skin, studies in dermatology can provide insight into diseases such as melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and actinic keratosis, among others.
