Gastroenterology

Gastrointestinal (GI) pathology is the study of the upper and lower digestive system; GI pathology is a sub-category of pathology which focuses on diseases of the gastrointestinal system. Physicians specializing in the gastrointestinal system are known gastroenterologists, and pathologists who interpret the lab work related to the GI system are known as GI pathologists.

Specimens are collected for information about the GI system through endoscopies for the upper GI and colonoscopies for the lower GI. Organs included in the GI system include the esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine, and the rectum. Utilizing samples of the GI tract, studies in gastroenterology can provide insight into diseases such as Barrett’s esophagus, Crohn’s disease, Lynch syndrome, and Celiac/Sprue disease, among others.
